Recommended tiers

Servings needed
100
  • Based on standard 1×2-inch wedding slices for 100 guests.
  • Recommended tiers (round): 6", 8", 10", 12" — 4 tiers.
  • Party-size (larger) slices serve fewer people, so confirm the serving style with your baker.

These are planning estimates based on common rules of thumb. Always confirm final quantities and pricing with your venue and vendors.

How this is calculated

  • One 1×2-inch slice per guest.
  • Round tier servings: 6" 12, 8" 24, 10" 38, 12" 56, 14" 78; square tiers serve ~30% more.
  • The smallest tiered stack that covers your guests is recommended; a sheet cake can cover any remainder.
  • Saving the top tier removes that tier's servings from what's served.

Every figure here is a well-worn planning rule of thumb, not a quote — use it to budget early, then lock in real numbers as you book.

Frequently asked questions

How many tiers does my wedding cake need?

It depends on your guest count and tier shape. This calculator picks the smallest standard stack — from a two-tier 6"/8" cake up to a five-tier 6"–14" cake — whose servings cover your guests. Square tiers serve more per size than round tiers.

How are wedding cake servings counted?

Servings are based on standard 1 × 2-inch wedding slices, which are smaller than the party-size slices many people picture. A 10-inch round tier serves about 38, while a 10-inch square serves about 50. Confirm the serving style with your baker, since larger slices feed fewer people.

What if I want to save the top tier?

Saving the top tier for your first anniversary is a popular tradition. When you enable that option, the calculator stops counting the smallest tier as served and sizes the rest of the cake (or a sheet cake backup) to still cover all your guests.

Should I add a hidden sheet cake?

A hidden sheet (or kitchen) cake lets you display a smaller, more affordable tiered cake while the kitchen slices a plain sheet cake to feed the rest of the room. The calculator tells you how many sheet-cake servings you'll need to cover the gap.
